CATHOLIC RELIGIOUS BROTHER SENDS NOT SO "SUBTLE" MESSAGE IN DEFENSE ABOUT INAPPRORIATE TOUCHING OF CHILDREN AT HAITIAN ORPHANAGE

SATURDAY, MAY 14, 2011

Developing story....

Franciscan Brother Robert-Anthony Campbell, FSB responds to questions about inappropriate touching of children at orphanage in Haiti with subtle, arrogant and self serving scolding of child protection advocate.

Roman Catholic priest, Rev. Marc Boisvert, executive director of Pwoje Espwa in Les Cayes, Haiti (www.freethekids.org) has shut down all communication about this matter.

Where is the voice of Dr. Cynthia Desoi of Lewiston, Maine? Dr. Desoi is a member of Pwoje Espwa's board of directors and serves as the medical director of Pwoje Espwa.

Instead of responding directly to questions about his conduct with children, Brother Campbell posted this not so "subtle"message on his blog on Friday, May 13th.

Protecting children from child sex abuse, Brother Campbell, is about a community's vigilance. If it's established procedure at Pwoje Espwa for Catholic priests and brothers to bathe and touch the bodies of naked children, then please say so.

Breathe life, not death, into your words
The power of speech is not to be underestimated. It can bring life, and it can bring death. For God, “breathing” words results in life: water, animals, human beings, mercy, and compassion! Mary followed in God’s footsteps with a single word on her part that resulted in her bearing the Christ child in the world. On the other hand some of our words can be death-dealing. Saul, a persecutor of Jesus’ followers before his conversion, “breathed murderous threats” that resulted in much fear, injury, and death. How will you use your power of speech to nurture life? - Take Five For Faith

Today’s Readings: Acts 9:1-20; John 6:52-59
“Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?”

I still do not recall any previous discussions with you, even though you make specific mention of this in your blog post.

As I mentioned, we are happy to talk to you to see if we might be able to help you and your organization.

Please re-read the note that I sent you on Friday and please be reminded that Mr. Scott is in Haiti. Upon his return, he and I will make arrangements to speak with you at a time that is convenient for you.

Thank you

William Commer

RE: Project Espwa

Les Cayes, Haiti

Dear Mr. Conner,

It seems that you want to do it your way. I don't need to speak with you at this time. I am simply requesting a copy of your child protection policy.

If you don't have one, please say so. If you are unwilling to share it, please say so.

Why is there a need to wait two weeks for someone else to discuss this issue? Boisvert indicated to me that there is an extensive child protection policy already in place. I am certain the Board of Directors has a copy of the child protection manual.

Please send it to me.

I urge you not to make more of this than need be. One would think you'd be delighted to share any information that can help protect children from any kind of abuse.I should tell you that the more we are pushed back, the more vigilant we become.

Finally, what is Boisvert's email address?

Haitian journalist, Cyrus Sibert, and I may want tospeak with him directly.

Thank you for your consideration of this matter.

Sincerely,
Paul Kendrick

Has the child protection information I requested been sent to me?

My request is simple. Would you please provide me with a copy of your child protection policy, systems and procedures manual.

Dear Mr. Connor,

My request is simple. Would you please provide me with a copy of your child protection policy, systems and procedures manual.

Project Espwa is one of the largest boarding facilities for children in Haiti. As such, I expect that your organization's child protection plan is one of the most comprehensive plans in Haiti. We would like to review your plan as part of our effort to create a best practice model for schools and institutions in Haiti.

Also, I would like to be able to write directly to Marc Boisvert. I will need his email address.

Many thanks,
Paul Kendrick

Portland, Maine attorney urged to put down boxing gloves and help protect Haitian children from sex abuse

Portland, Maine attorney, Robert Morris, is a member of the Board of Directors of Free the Kids, the fund raising arm of Pwoje Espwa Sud, an orphanage that houses 800 children in Les Cayes, Haiti.

In recent weeks, questions have arisen about the conduct of a self-proclaimed Franciscan monk who volunteers at the orphanage.

In his May 3rd
blog (now shut down by him), Brother Robert-Anthony Campbell, FSD wrote the following about an 11 year-old Haitian orphan:
"I showered him from head to toe, scrubbed his hair and washed his shorts. I also found time to re-apply the cream I've been using to help his rash and I'm happy to report the rash has cleared up (and he's a lot cleaner too, lol) I'm going to pick up some new sandals for him tomorrow after I go to the bank. It was frustrating to shower him and re-dress him in clean underwear, shorts and a T-shirt then let him leave barefoot..."
May 3, 2011, Brother Robert Anthony Campbell, FSD

Morris, his fellow Free the Kids board members (including Dr. Cynthia Desoi of Lewiston, Maine) and Rev. Marc Boisvert, OMI, the founder of Pwoje Espwa have reacted to questions about Brother Campbell's conduct with silence and hostility.

Dear Rev. Boisvert,

Please issue a public statement in which you explain the reason(s) why Brother Robert-Anthony Campbell, FSD has been recalled to the United Stated by his religious order.

The removal of Brother Campbell from your Pwoje Espwa staff is a  grave and serious  matter that demands your immediate and undivided attention.

You must be open and transparent about the circumstances surrounding this issue. Attempts by you, your board of directors and/or senior Oblate officials to keep secrets and cover up this incident will not be tolerated.

Please feel free to contact me.
